  • Exercise – If exercise could be packed into a pill, it would be the single most widely prescribed and beneficial medicine in the nation. Its importance can be easily overlooked in our busy work scheduled and lifestyles but it’s something that we all need to embrace in to our daily routine. Walk to work instead of driving, take the stairs instead of the lift or even organise an evening walk with your friends. These small and simple steps can make a difference in your health and fitness levels; you never know you might even enjoy it! We have developed our very own yoga inspired exercise for older people called YOPI – the first of its kind in the care home sector where our residents take part in simple easy movements and breathing exercises, it has been a big hit with the residents and keeps them active.

  • Eat well – It’s so easy to just grab a packet of crisps when you’re hungry or to have a few extra biscuits with your cup of tea but all of these small snacks add up and can increase your calorie intake drastically. The key to eating well is to prepare! Spend an hour prepping up your lunches for the next couple of days and stock up on fruit or other healthy alternatives for snacking on. Click here for a fantastic list of easy and healthy recipes you can make at home. Don’t forget to keep topped up on water, try aim for 8 glasses a day and limit your caffeine and fizzy drink intake.

  • Sleep well! This can be easier said than done for most people and things like stress, anxiety, worry and even bad diets and dehydration can disturb our sleep. We are recommended to have around 8 hours per night but sometimes this isn’t always the case. Try a 10 minute meditation session before bed, it eases the mind and prepares the brain to relax. Also try keeping your mobile phone in a drawer out of sight, staying up late scrolling through Facebook will only keep your mind active!
